I dropped two plastic packages of Spax screws at the Home Despot one time and realized that I’d fit all the screws into one package. So I took both packages and paid for the empty one. I routinely drink a cold Monster at Walmart, paying for the empty can at checkout. So I am the Moron who pays for all of their stuff at self checkout.

The authors further proposed that retailers bore some blame for the problem. In their zeal to cut labor costs, the study said, supermarkets could be seen as having created “a crime-generating environment” that promotes profit “above social responsibility.”
So it’s the store’s fault. Got it.

Appropriate outcome. If I get out to the car and discover that the store has made a mistake, I might not feel motivated to go back inside to help them correct it. But I won’t stea l from them.

I suppose I have two releva nt experiences. Doing houselopnik projects last year, I ended getting a floori ng saw for free from Lowe’s. It was in the bottom of the cart, and a whole bunch of expensive paint was also left in the cart to be scanned by the checker (a whole bunch of small stuff was put on the counter). I knew it was going to be a $600+ visit, but when the cashier rang everything up the total was a bit under $500. I knew that wasn’t right, so I asked the cashier to say the total again. I think she picked up on the hint, and double checked all the gallons of paint and then asked for the same total. I knew it wasn’t right, but I didn’t know exactly what had been missed. I payed the total and went home. G oing over it once I got home, I figured out she missed the $140 saw in the bottom of the cart. I felt a bit bad about it, but rationalized it as I didn’t know exactly what they missed at the time and I offered the chance to fix it. I look at it as a thank-you gift of sorts. Of the thousands I spent at Lowe’s last year doing the houselopnik update of most of the house, they still made a lot of money off of me. Maybe this is wrong, but I chalked it up as a grey area thing.
The other time I walked out of a s tore without paying for something was a plumbing fitting when I was 10 years old. My dad had told me to hang onto to it as he was looking for the right fitting. I forgot all about it in my pocket until later that afternoon a t home. I was so mortified by it that I’ve never spoken or written of it until now. I guess I’m a sap that wouldn’t willingly scam the self-check out kiosk.

That first one is interesting. You did give them a chance to sort it. It’s their mistake.
This is not the same thing, but I went into O’Reilly to buy an oil filter and there were like ten people in front of me in a line that was at an absolute standstill. The price of the filter was around $8 with tax, so I tore the tab off the bottom of the box and placed the tab, and a ten-dollar bill on the counter in front of the grumpiest of the associates, and said, “Keep the change” and walked out of the store.

Where do you live? In that case, the utility should just bill the owner of the property. Were you receiving a billing statement each month for your own apartment?

Self checkout at the local supermarket is very hard to game because of the bag scales unless you are dealing with fruit and veg. Which is why most of our f&v now comes wrapped in plastic and bar coded. This isn’t a win.
Our local equivalent of Lowe's tried them but found they needed just as many staff to manage the customers (either preventing theft or minimising customer fuckups) as the had running checkouts. Plus they needed to know the weight of everything to make them usefully secure! Not going to happen...

This was the late 90s in Georgia when natural gas went through
deregulation
. We were billed each with our own meter, but the they coudn’t keep the meters locked so they just shut off the entire complex as a safety issue and each unit had to schedule someone
to come out and light their pilot lights. it was a mess

Their mistake, their problem (unless you were deliberately trying to atop them noticing the saw). If you knew, you should have said something. You didn’t, so that’s entirely on the cashier.
Not scanning stuff at a self checkout is both theft and total douchebaggery. I have more respect for the person who just walks out without paying than the one who trys to make themselves look ( read: feel ) honest and rationalize theft.
